Tomorrow will be the eighth anniversary of International Accessibility Awareness Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May.
On this day, institutions and activists in the fields of people with disabilities raise awareness about the concept of digital access to websites and applications, and the extent of change that we can all make to make the lives of people with disabilities easier if our websites and applications are accessible.
The idea for this day came through post Written by Joe Devon, he talked about the need for us to have an International Accessibility Awareness Day, because awareness is what we're missing. The developer must know what could change in the lives of people with disabilities if they adapt their application or website for assistive technology users.
A lot of the developers I've talked to want to make their apps compatible. Unfortunately, we have a significant lack of information and specialized content in the field of accessibility. We should contribute to raising awareness by writing short posts on Twitter or Facebook. using the tag
#GAAD. Introducing best practices in the field of digital access to developers, content writers, and others.
From here, I invite our institutions and governments to participate in spreading awareness in the field of digital access, and to provide short workshops for developers and those working in the field of developing websites and applications, to get acquainted with the best international standards in the field of accessibility.
We too can contribute, by publishing our experiences, the challenges we face, and the impact of technology in our daily lives. Thank you to organizations that care about accessibility, for encouraging them to continue, and for showing us the great benefit they have given us, by working to make their products accessible.
